EXCERPTS

IUP Publications

ICFAI's foray into publishing can be said to have begun in 1984 itself, when a monthly newsletter, the Chartered Financial Analyst, was first published for circulation among the students registered for the foundation's CFA program.

The newsletter was converted into a monthly magazine in 1994. The first journal, the ICFAI Journal of Applied Finance, was launched in 1995.

The second magazine, the ICFAI Reader, was launched in 1998. This was followed by the Effective Executive in 1999. The year 2001 was an exceptionally busy year for the division: 12 magazines and journals were conceived and launched.

By April 2003, the division was publishing 16 magazines and 15 journals. (See Exhibit V for a list of the magazines and journals)...

Organization of the Division

The organization of the Publications Division is given in Exhibit VIII. At the end of March 2003, the division had 65 employees. Details are given in Exhibit IX. Organizing the content for each magazine was the responsibility of a Consulting Editor (CE), assisted by a Research Associate (RA). The CEs were generally faculty at the business schools or at other divisions of ICFAI. They worked part-time on the magazines, while the RAs worked full time.

One RA was assigned to each magazine, but in the case of journals, one RA handled upto three separate journals (since they were published on a quarterly basis). Though the CEs worked part-time, they had to assume a lot of responsibility. They had to identify material for inclusion in the magazine, write abstracts and fillers (or edit and rewrite the material written by the RA), write editorials, and coordinate with the contributors of original articles. The CEs typically had little or no prior experience in bringing out magazines, or for that matter, in journalism or publishing. Around half the CEs of the magazines were former bank managers with at least 20 years work experience, who had taken early retirement to pursue academic careers...
